Though only half an hour away, my next site belongs to a very different landscape, where wold turns to combe in which, hidden away, we find the legendary city of Aqua Sulis, Aquamania or Baðum – otherwise known as Bath: England’s Venice. Usually I am wary of such comparisons. To paraphrase Betjeman: perhaps it’s best not to call Weymouth the Naples of Dorset. How many Italians call Naples the Weymouth of Italy? But in this case, I think its justified. Like Venice, Bath is a party city with serious Roman heritage, a replica of the Rialto Bridge and a complex series of canals. Unlike Venice, these were not for the transit of people but stone quarried by Ralph Allen, spearheading our next batch of businessman who, seeing the increasing popularity of Bath’s natural springs, made a fortune providing the material out of which much of the city is built.
